Cadent expansion set to create around 100 Birmingham jobs

Cadent’s planned move into a new Birmingham facility is expected to create approximately 100 jobs in the city. The UK gas distribution network operator has signed a 10-year lease for the 80,000 sq ft DC4 unit at Bromford Gate, next to its existing National Distribution Centre.

The expansion will bring Cadent’s Birmingham-based operations together in one location. The company has started fit-out work and aims to begin operating from the new unit in early 2027. The roles associated with the expansion will increase Cadent’s local workforce and its economic contribution to the West Midlands.

A larger local employment base

Cadent manages 82,000 miles of gas pipes across the Northwest, East and West Midlands, East of England and London. Its Birmingham presence therefore supports a wider national infrastructure operation. Consolidating activity beside the existing distribution centre is intended to provide additional operational space while keeping the company’s local teams within the same industrial location.

Robert Martin, Cadent’s Real Estate Strategy Manager, said the site’s availability suited the company’s timing and location requirements. He added that Cadent moved quickly to secure the unit and is looking forward to becoming operational once the fit-out is complete.

The announcement does not detail the occupations, recruitment timetable, pay arrangements or training programmes linked to the additional jobs. It does, however, establish a clear workforce outcome: about 100 new positions in Birmingham as the facility becomes operational.

Workplace setting and regional context

Bromford Gate is already occupied by GXO, Stellantis and Fischer Farms. With Cadent’s agreement, the park is fully leased. The concentration of industrial employers may provide a substantial employment setting, although no further information has been given about shared services or cross-company recruitment.

Prologis’ available West Midlands space is now focused on Prologis Park Coventry. Refurbished DC13 offers 228,000 sq ft, while DC8 has 184,000 sq ft and is undergoing refurbishment due for completion in December 2026.

Cadent is the UK’s largest gas distribution network. Its Birmingham expansion will be watched locally as a source of new employment linked to essential infrastructure operations.
